Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

A small and scattered world population confined to N. America and Eurasia. Habitat decline and subsequent decrease in its population.
Europe: Historical and continuing decline /15% -30% in 10 years? or
N. America?
Suggested assessment: VU-NT (A) based on European population.


Geographic range

Rare species with a distribution in N. America (particularly eastern part) and Eurasia.
Records from the UK, Finland, Germany and Algeria < 1950. Not observed in the southern hemisphere.


Population and Trends

Appr. 400 records in GBIF, (Lycoperdon redicatum + Bovistella radicata).
Europe: historical and ongoing decrease in population due to habitat decline.
Status in N. America unknown.

Habitat and Ecology

Saprotrohic in open heathland and dry grazed grassland, light pine forests on sandy soil, Acidophilic and thermophilic.


Threats

Overgrowth, forestation and exploitation of open, sandy heathland.
Current localities fragmented.
Small current population.


Conservation Actions

Known localities should be regularly monitored to get a clearer picture of its occurrence and the status of the localities.
Dedicated search missions could be initiated in regions with suitable habitats. Overgrowt or forestation of its localities should be avoided.
