Assessment Notes

Taxonomic notes

Geastrum floriforme has a recently described sister species known only from its type locality in Hungary: G. hansagiense.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Geastrum floriforme is a species of dry and grazed habitats, with a cosmopolitan distribution. Records from the tropics to be confirmed. Strongholds in Europe and SE Australia. Locally threatened by habitat decline but the overall picture seems to be stable. Suggested assessment: LC

Geographic range

Geastrum floriforme has a world wide distribution in temperate and possibly tropical regions. However DNA- from soil samples from the tropics do not fully match the European concept of this species (it was originally described from Italy). This may indicate that we are dealing with one or more deviating
species in the Tropics. G. floriforme in its original sense reaches far north into the boreal zone in Fennoscandia.

Population and Trends

Appr. 1500 records on GBIF database, distributed on all continents.
No immediate threats and populations appears to be stable

Population Trend: Stable

Habitat and Ecology

Geastrum floriforme is a species of exposed, dry and warm grazed grasslands, steppe habitats, shrubland, occasionally in plantations and gardens. Several records in Europe have been noted around ant-heaps by Formica spp, nesting in sandy soil in open pastures. It is possibly favoured by calcareous soil but does not seem to be dependent soil pH. It needs a low and patchy vegetation and a moderate disturbance of the upper soil to thrive. Grazing by cattle or trampling by humans seem to create favorable conditions. Appears to be somewhat nitrophilous.

Threats

Overgrowth of exposed, grazed grasslands is detrimental and may be a threat in some areas.

Conservation Actions

Research needed

Research is needed to investigate the potential occurrence of cryptic/semicryptic species in the G. floriforme-complex. This will have to include a broad geographical sampling and combine morphological and molecular data.
