Cup-fungi, Truffles and AlliesThis species is the type for the generic name, and is therefore the type of the family and order and class. It has never been sequenced (DNA) or cultured.
Neolecta flavovirescens is the type of an unusual phylogenetic branch, in its own family and order. The species has not been seen since before 1881-1897. There are only 2 other recognized species in the genus and they have been repeatedly collected and it is their DNA sequence data that defines the family and order. It is possibly extinct. An effort to find it should be made. It is conspicuous, being yellowish green as the name suggests.
Known only from two collections from Brazil. The type was from Apiahy, Sao Paulo State, Brazil, on the forest floor collected in July 1881 by Dr. J. Puiggari. The second was collected some where in Brazil by Glaziou some time before 1897.
It is only known from one state in Brazil and only from two collections in the 1800s. There are no other reports.
Population Trend: Uncertain
This species is only known from the forest floor, but no associated trees or other plants were recorded. It fruited in July. Two other species from the Northern Hemisphere are associated with conifers and are root parasites or root endophytes.
Forest loss
Need to relocate the species
Need to relocate the fungus and to sequence from fresh specimens.
