Saprotrophic in exposed, arid habitats, among calcareous cliffs, in sand steppe, sandy grazed grassland, light sandy woodland. Dependent on a low and sparse vegetation and probably favoured by moderate soil disturbance such as trampling from grazing sheep or cattle.
Habitat decline due to overgrowth if grazing ceases or is abandoned.
