Assessment Notes

Taxonomic notes

Syn.: Tulostoma hollosii Z. Moravec
Tulostoma poculatum V.S. White

Closely related to (and with very similar macrofeatures) to T. striatum G. Cunn.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Widely distributed in N. America, Eurasia and Australia. Small population but potentially underrecorded, however with a decreasing trend due to changes in land use and abandoned grazing.

Estimated number of mature individuals: 10000
Suggested assessment: VU(C1)

Geographic range

N. America, Eurasia and Australia. Rare but widely distrbuted. In Europe particularly abundant in the Pannonian steppe zone of Central Hungary.

Population and Trends

Appr 300 records on GBIF database. Widely distributed and potentially underrecorded or misidentified for other species (eg. T. fimbriatum).

Estimated number of localities: 500
Estimated number of mature individuals: 10000

Habitat decline due to overgrowth and changes in land use.

Population Trend: Decreasing

Habitat and Ecology

Saprotrophic in exposed, arid habitats, among calcareous cliffs, in sand steppe, sandy grazed grassland, light sandy woodland.  Dependent on a low and sparse vegetation and probably favoured by moderate soil disturbance such as trampling from grazing sheep or cattle.

Temperate Grassland

Threats

Habitat decline due to overgrowth if grazing ceases or is abandoned.
Changing land use: steppe habitats being transformed into arable land

Conservation Actions

Maintain traditional land use in known localities
