Tulostoma exasperatum is pantropical while var. ridleyi is endemic to South East Asia.
According to Wright (1987), Tulostoma exasperatum var. ridleyi (Massee) J.E. Wright has different features from the norm: the stems are longer, reaching more than 120 mm in length, and the basidoma is more robust. The spores are also larger 4.7-5.1 x 6.4-8.1 microns. This variety is supposedly restricted to S.E. Asia. Further study may be needed to determine if this is true.
