Laccaria longipes is found in bogs across the Great Lakes region of the USA and Canada east through northeastern US and Southeastern Canada. It grows among moss, usually Sphagnum, under Picea mariana, Larix laricina, and Alnus rugosa but additional collections and observations from moss associating with other conifers have been reported. It likely forms ectomycorrhizal associations with the resident conifer trees. Given its wide distribution range, it is estimated to have a large population size which appears stable and is assessed as Least Concern.
