Saprotrophic in grazed dry grassland, sand dunes, sandsteppe, sometimes in needle beds under Juniper bush in open and exposed sites. One record from a grazed subalpine south-facing grassy slope in Central Norway (northernmost record). Can be very abundant in its localities. Needs a low and sparse field layer and is favoured by moderate soil disturbance from grazing cattle. Thermophilous and calciphilous. Occurs both inland and along coastlines.
