Pseudohydnum gelatinosum is characterized by the applanate to stipitate basidiomata up to 12cm, upper pilear surface smooth to scattered-papillate, hymenophore with subcylindrical to conical fertile spines, basidia 2-4 celled, and basidiospores globose, smooth up to 5-6 x 5-5.5 µm.
The species in known in 48 countries. In Brazil, it is known in 8 of the 26 states.
There are about 6858 records of this species in GBIF, most of them in Sweden, but only 11 in Brazil.
Population Trend:
In Brazil, the species is found in Amazon Forest, Atlantic Rain Forest and Cerrado.
The species is distributed in Brazil moslty in the pluvial forest domain. However, the Amazon has currently the highest rates of deforestation in the last decades and the Atlantic Forest is already a hotspot.
Most records are in protected areas, however few of them in Cerrado (also a hotspot).
Other areas in Brazil should be studied in order to assess the distribution of this species. In addition, the species was originally described from New Zealand and molecular studies should be carried out on other specimens in order to confirm the occurrence of this species elsewhere.
