Syn.: G. sessile (Sowerby) Pouzar
An abundant woodland species with a cosmoplitan distrubution. Threatened by modern forestry methods (clear cutting) but the wide distribution and its abundance may compensate for potential regional decline. Suggested assessment: LC
A common and widely distributed species. Particularly dense populations in Europe.
A widely spread and abundant species with a cosmopolitan distribution.
Population Trend: Stable
Grows in a variety of woodlands and is particularly abundant in old-growth coniferous and mixed woodland in the hemiboreal-boreal zones of Europe. Reaches north to the polar circle i Sweden and Norway. Also in semi-open rich deciduous woodland in continental Europe, more rarely found in dry, open grassland. More or less calciphilous. Saprotrophic.
Modern forestry is a threat to this species, particularly detrimental to its occurrences in boreal and montane regions.
