Assessment Notes

Not sure if this is a 1) rare species with a curious biogeography 2) widespread but under-recorded or 3) if there have been misidentified specimens.

If I consider all sites we could maybe go for LC - 4 sites x 2 mature individuals per log x ~3 logs per site x 1000 = 24000 individuals

Justification

Cejpomyces globosisporus is a corticioid species that has been recorded in Gabon, Japan, and Switzerland. Despite its apparent wide distribution, very few records and information are available and it is not clear if this is a very undersampled species with a wide distribution or if specimens from different locations have been misidentified as the same species. Taxonomic review of known specimens and targeted search efforts are needed to estimate distribution and population, so for now it is assessed as Data Deficient (DD).

Taxonomic notes

Only remaining species in the genus Cejpomyces. Synonym: Botryobasidium globosisporum. (Species Fungorum, 2023)

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Geographic range

C. globosisporus has been listed for Japan (Maekawa, 2021), recorded once in Libreville, Gabon (Boidin and Gilles, 1982) and more recently in two sites in Switzerland in 2010 and 2013 (GBIF.org, 2023).  Taxonomic studies have not been undertaken to determine if the disjunct subpopulations are contaxic.

Population and Trends

Confirmation of the distribution and taxonomy of the species is needed to estimate population size and trends.

Population Trend: Uncertain

Habitat and Ecology

Corticioid species found on dead wood.

Research needed

Targeted search efforts are needed to estimate population size and distribution for this species. Taxonomic review and molecular analysis is also neededl to confirm its taxonomic placement in this monotypic genus and confirm identification of specimens from different locations.
