Justification

Setogyroporus verus is a fungus from the Boletaceae family, known from Burundi in Africa. It has only been documented two times, in 1978 and 1982. Very little information is available on this species, so targeted search efforts are needed to understand whether it has been overlooked and/or confused with other species or if it is potentially rare. For now, the information is not sufficient to estimate the overall range, population size or trend, and the species is assessed as Data Deficient (DD).

Taxonomic notes

Setogyroporus verus is the only representative of the monotypic genus Setogyroporus, established due to the distinct microscopic features of its spores (Heinemann and Rammeloo 1982).

Geographic range

This species is only known from two sites in the southwest of Burundi, in Central Africa (based on points from GBIF.org 2022).

Population and Trends

Setogyroporus verus has only been documented for two sites in Burundi, in 1978 and 1982 (GBIF.org 2022). Though this could be a rare species, it is also possible that the lack of records may be due to confusion with other Boletaceae species (e.g. Xerocomus spp.), and the need for spore microscopy for its identification (Heinemann and Rammeloo 1983). Therefore, it is not possible to estimate population size without more current records and targeted search efforts.

Habitat and Ecology

The Setogyroporus genus has been listed as ectomycorrhizal (Buyck et al. 1996). Given that this species' type specimen was found in an area with Brachystegia sp., a genus of tree typical of miombo woodlands, that is known to form ectomycorrhizal associations, it is likely this may be a host. However, no more information on the habitat and ecology of this species is available.

Threats

Setogyroporus verus is thought to grow in association with Brachystegia sp., a tree typical of miombo woodlands. This type of habitat is currently threatened by increasing human pressures and deforestation (Gumbo et al. 2018), which may in turn affect S. verus. However, more information on habitat requirements is needed to establish the exact threats.
