Mushroom, Bracket and PuffballCercopemyces ponderosus is a rarely collected species apparently endemic to the eastern United States. The species is proposed for consideration due to its extreme rarity.
Originally collected by L.R. Hesler in the Great Smoky Mountains in 1942, Cercopemyces ponderosus is represented by only a handful of collections in MycoPortal, including two other collections from the same or close locality to the type locality. One additional collection from France and one from Idaho are also listed in MycoBank, but were not verified by authors of the 2014 study transferring the species from Cystoderma to the new genus Cercopemyces.
