Privacy Summary

This website collects only the personal data you voluntarily provide.

  • Your name and, where appropriate, contact details may be displayed alongside contributions you make for Red List assessments.
  • Such contributor information may also be transferred to IUCN for inclusion in official Red List documentation.
  • Your personal data is not sold or used for unrelated purposes.
  • You may request removal or anonymisation of your data at any time.

Please see the full Privacy Policy below for further information.

1. Introduction

The Global Fungal Red List Initiative (“the Initiative”) is committed to protecting the privacy and personal data of all users of this Website. This Website is supported by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (“IUCN”), and this policy is aligned with IUCN’s data-protection standards. The Initiative acts as the data controller for any personal information you provide through this Website.

2. Information We Collect

We collect only the personal information you voluntarily provide to us, for example when you register for an account, contribute information for Red List assessments, submit data, subscribe to updates, or contact us. This may include:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Organisation
  • Any other details you choose to provide

Personal details you provide in connection with Red List assessment work may be displayed publicly in those specific contexts where you have actively contributed content or expertise. Such contributions may also be shared with IUCN for inclusion in official Red List assessments and related documentation.

We also collect certain technical data automatically when you use the Website (such as IP address, browser type, and pages visited) for the purposes of site operation and improvement.

3. Purpose and Legal Basis

We process your personal information for legitimate purposes including:

  • Providing you with access to the Website and its features.
  • Managing your account, contributions and any submissions you make.
  • Supporting the preparation of Red List assessments, including attribution of contributions.
  • Improving the Website and analysing how it is used.

Where personal data is associated with contributions for Red List assessments, processing is based on your voluntary participation and contribution. In other contexts, processing may rely on consent, legitimate interest, or contract, depending on the circumstances.

4. How Long We Keep Your Data

We retain your personal information for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes described above, or as required by law. If you choose to withdraw or delete your account, we will anonymise or delete your personal data, except where legal or legitimate reasons require us to retain it, such as for maintaining the integrity of published Red List assessments.

5. Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell or lease your personal information to third parties. However, contributor information relevant to Red List assessments may be shared with IUCN for inclusion in official assessment documentation and to ensure proper attribution of expert contributions.

Beyond this, we may share data with service providers acting on our behalf (under contract) and, if required by law, with relevant authorities. Transfers to organisations outside the European Economic Area (EEA) will only occur under appropriate safeguards.

6. Your Rights

Under applicable data-protection law (including the EU General Data Protection Regulation – GDPR), you have the right to access, rectify, delete or restrict processing of your personal data, and to withdraw consent at any time if processing is based on consent.

To exercise your rights or request deletion of your account and personal data, please contact us at: policy@redlist.info.

7. Hosting & Infrastructure

The Initiative’s website and all user-contributed data are hosted by Oderland Webbhotell AB as a data-processor (personuppgiftsbiträde) on our behalf. The primary data servers are located in Sweden and may in future reside in other countries within the EU/EEA. As long as hosting remains within Sweden or other EU/EEA countries, no transfers to third countries occur.

Should the hosting location change to a country outside the EU/EEA, appropriate safeguards — including Standard Contractual Clauses (SCC) — will be applied, and this policy will be updated accordingly.

Transfers of personal data outside the European Economic Area (EEA) will only occur under appropriate safeguards.

We use cookies and similar tools to improve your experience on the Website (for example to remember your preferences and analyse site usage). You may manage your cookie preferences via your browser settings. Please note that disabling certain cookies may affect site functionality.

9. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The version published on this page will always be the most current. The “Last updated” date below indicates when the policy was last revised.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my name shown on species pages?

Your name may appear on species or assessment pages only if you have actively contributed information, data, or expert input to a Red List assessment. This attribution ensures transparency and proper credit to contributors in line with IUCN Red List standards.

Can I contribute anonymously?

In most cases, contributions used for Red List assessments require attribution to ensure scientific transparency and accountability. If you wish to provide information anonymously, please contact us in advance so we can assess whether your contribution can be used without attribution.

How do I withdraw my contribution or personal data?

You may request the removal or anonymisation of your personal data at any time by contacting us at policy@redlist.info. Please note that if your name has already been included in published Red List assessment material, full removal may not be possible, but we will always explain what can be changed and what cannot.
