Buellia carballaliana is characterized by: 1.- its milk-coffee colored, thick, crustose to subsquamulose thallus, 2.- its ascospores Buellia-type with Physconia-type thickenings when young and may become microrugulate when overmature, and 3.- the presence of 5-O-methylhiascic acid.

Taxon just known from one specimen collected in northern Portugal in 1919, and stored in PO herbarium (University of Porto, Portugal).
Population Trend: Uncertain
The type locality is Póvoa de Lanhoso, where it was collected growing on lignum.
