Assessment Notes

Taxonomic notes

Navicular basidiospores relates this taxon with other species in the genus from the Southern Hemisphere (Gorjón et al. 2011).

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

This corticioid, basidiomycetous, bark-living fungus is restricted to Saxegothaea conspicua which is NT (IUCN Species Red List).
In Chile conversion of native forest in the Coastal Cordillera to commercial plantations of Pinus radiata and Eucalyptus, means that much of the habitat for this species has been lost and continues to disappear. Logging in the Andes outside of National Parks still occurs. Logging is often for firewood or is selective in order to extract young straight stemmed trees. In Argentina this host is mostly restricted in distribution and confined to national parks, created not more than 80 years ago.
For the moment not found in surveys in neighboring Chilean forests (Gorjón & Hallenberg 2012).

Criteria:
A2c VU: this criterium is applied on the basis of known population reduction of the host in the past to at least 30% [need reference here?].
D1 VU: this criterium is applied on the basis of the host restricted AOO and number of locations where the fungus has been found.

Geographic range

Known from only 2 localities in the Patagonian Andes forests of southern Argentina (see map):

Argentina, Neuquén-Río Negro: Nahuel Huapi National Park, Puerto Blest
Argentina, Neuquén, Lanín National Park, Lago Queñi

Population and Trends

Population status is unknown. Likely to depend on host presence but the species has not been found in all stands.

Population Trend: Stable

Habitat and Ecology

Lives and fruits on bark of living trees.

Subantarctic Forest

Threats

Over-exploitation of the host.

Logging & wood harvesting

Conservation Actions

Conservation of the species highly depends on host protection and conservation.

Resource & habitat protection

Research needed

Geographic range needs to be assessed, especially in Chile.

Population size, distribution & trends

Use and Trade
