Assessment Notes

Justification

Since the description of Cantherellus haughtonii there appear to be very few subsequent records of the species. There is limited information available from the type description and with a lack of information on the habitat and ecology of the species, it is not possible to assess the status of its population or distribution. It is therefore assessed as Data Deficient.

In addition, the species should be reviewed in light of the most recent accepted taxonomy, due to the potential for it to be a synonym of the recently described Leucocybe houghtonii.

Taxonomic notes

Cantharellus haughtonii was described by W. Phillips in 1876 as ‘Cantharellus haughtoni’.

A 1954 account of the species identified it as identical to Omphalia roseotincta and described it as Clitocybe houghtonii (Dennis, 1954). The current Index Fungorum taxonomy lists Cantharellus houghtonii, Clitocybe houghtonii and O. roseotincta as synonyms of Leucocybe houghtonii (W. Phillips) Halama & Pencakowski (only described in 2017).

Note that preliminary assessment completed with information for Cantharellus haughtonii only.

GBIF lists taxonomy of Cantharellus haughtonii as doubtful.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Chanterelle species to be assessed as part of the chanterelle comprehensive project.

Geographic range

Range unknown, described from UK in type description. Type is thought to be from Shropshire, and a few subsequent records from Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Kincardineshire were made (Dennis, 1954).

No occurrence data available on GBIF.

If further assessment is completed for species for which C. haughtonii is a synonym, other occurrence data may be available.

Population and Trends

Only known from type description and a reference to some historical records by Dennis (1954).

Population Trend: Uncertain

Habitat and Ecology

No available information in type description but Dennis (1954) highlights specimens of C. haughtonii were found on ‘Sambucus and other wood’, however extent of habitat unknown.
