Justification

This species has an estimated population size of around 400-4,000 mature individuals, in small subpopulations of no more than 50 mature individuals, along with a continuing decline in population. It is, therefore, precautionarily assessed as Endangered C2a(i).

Geographic range

The only four known locations are in Coquimbo region (northern Chile), Araucanía and Los Lagos regions (southern Chile). Based on these sites the extent of occurrence is 12,909 km². The area of occupancy is quoted in the Chilean national assessment as 400 km², however, this is based on using a 10x10 km grid over the collection locality data.

Population and Trends

The four sites are in three regions of Chile. One of these is in northern Chile and the other two are in southern Chile, therefore the distribution of this species is discontinuous and uncertain. Based on the currently known records, the four collections represent 40 ramets (mature individuals) at four localities. Assuming it is present in 10-100 times as many localities, the population size is estimated as 400-4,000 mature individuals, comprised of small subpopulations of no more than 50 mature individuals. A continuing decline in the population size is inferred based on a continuing decline in the area of available habitat, through forest loss and changing land use.

Habitat and Ecology

This species is thought to be a biotrophic fungus and grows in small groups or in bundles in leaf litter, moss or on Nothofagus forest and other arboreal species (i.e. Nothofagus, Aextoxicon, Eucryphia, Fitzroya, Myrtaceae).

Threats

This species is associated with Nothofagus and other types of trees which have suffered a decline of more than 50% in this area over the past 40 years. The areas where the species has been found is threatened by disturbance and transformation of its area of occupancy due to change in land use for agriculture and forestry.

Conservation Actions

There are no conservation actions currently in place for this species, and it is not recorded from within any protected areas. It is nationally listed as Vulnerable B2ab(iii) in Chile. Further research is needed on this species’ ecology, taxonomy (phylogenetic studies), distribution, population size and trends.
