Uncommon hairy brown, rust-brown or yellow-brown, circular, tough, thickish polypore with a sturdy vevety brownish stem that grows under hardwoods and sometimes conifers. Most unusual is the development on the hymenium of pores that can appear to be concentrically arranged. Spore print is light brown
Coltricia montagnei is not a common mushroom, very unusual and rare mushroom is distinctive in that the pores tend to break up into concentric plate-like structures. This gives the impression of gills which run around the stipe instead of radiating from the stipe to the edge of the cap. It has only been reported once in Kansas when Richard Kay found it in 1995.
