Justification
Mycena tenax is locally a very common species in the coastal Pacific Northwest, and occasional in the Cascade Range. It has also been reported from Quebec, Canada, and is likely to be more widespread than reports indicate. The population appears to be stable and no decline has been recorded. It is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Taxonomic notes
This species was described from Oregon, USA (Smith 1936).
Geographic range
This species occurs in south-east Alaska, USA, south through coastal British Columbia, Canada, but is more widespread in the Pacific Northwest (from coast to Cascade Range) into coastal northern California, USA. It has also been reported from Quebec, Canada, and is likely to be more widespread in northern conifer forests.
Population and Trends
This species is widespread, and locally it is very common. Siegel and Schwartz (2016) describe it as "by far the most common Mycena" in northern California spruce forests, "often carpeting the duff with thousands of fruitbodies". No decline has been recorded.
Population Trend: stable
Habitat and Ecology
It is saprotrophic, growing on conifer needle duff and moss in young to mature forests. It has a preference for, but is not restricted to, wet spruce forests of Northern California and the Pacific Northwest.
Threats
No specific threats have been identified with regards to this species.
Conservation Actions
This species was included on the US Forest Service Northwest Forest Plan species of special concern (Castellano
