This is now considered to be in the genus Neoboletus
This is a widespread species. It would likely qualify as Least Concern if there is no evidence for any rapid declines.
This species occurs over the northern hemisphere (see Gbif; Neoboletus luridiformis (Rostk.) Gelardi, Simonini & Vizzini, 2014 in GBIF Secretariat (2019). GBIF Backbone Taxonomy. Checklist dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/39omei accessed via GBIF.org on 2019-11-12).
With such a wide distribution the population size is suspected to be very large.
Population Trend: Uncertain
This species is found in woodland, forming micorrhiza with beech, oak and conifers (Evans and Kibby 2004).
While this species can be eaten when cooked, it is poisonous when raw (Evans and Kibby 2004).
