There is a large amount of uncertainty around this species, and even in the early 20th Century there were taxonomic doubts regarding it. Given these doubts, this species is assessed as Data Deficient, but further taxonomic work is encouraged.
In the early 20th Century doubts were raised as to the taxonomy of this species (e.g. Saccardo and Trotter 1912). I is probably not a Cantharellus, but it might be a overgrown form of Craterellus melanoxeros ((I. Olariaga Ibarguren in litt. 2022).The name appear not to have been used since it was described.
This species is only known from a collection made in fields around Siena, Italy (see Saccardo and Trotter 1912).
There is no information regarding population size and trends.
Population Trend: Uncertain
This species was collected from a field (see Saccardo and Trotter 1912), but the level of anthropogenic disturbance of this field is unknown.
Without clearer information regarding the status and distribution of this species, it is not possible to identify its key threats.
Taxonomic work is needed to resolve the status of this species, and if considered to be valid, modern surveys are needed to get a clearer idea of its distribution and ecology.
