Taxonomic notes

Colonies white, reverse white to light gray, rapidly growing in BDA, filling the entire Petri dish (9 cm) after five days at 29 °C. Sporangiophores simple or sympodially branched 4.5–11 μm diam. Sporangia 20–75 × 20–70 μm, light yellow. Columellae 15–35 (–45,6) × 13–30 (–33,52) μm, globose to ellipsoid, pyriform, some conical; collar evident. Sporangiospores ellipsoid 3.5–11 × 3–10 μm. Zigosporangia. Chlamydospores observed present on the aerial mycelia.

Habitat and Ecology

This species is distributed worldwide and has been isolated from soil, insects, fruits, honeycomb, limestone, and plasticized polyvinylchloride (Sabev et al. 2006)


Threats

In Brazil, M. fragilis has been reported from soil of Atlantic Forest, seeds of maize, and from Duponchelia fovealis (Lepidoptera).
