Taxonomic notes
Hexagonia papyracea and H. variegata are synonymous. This species is easily recognizable due to the thin, flexible, brown, heavily zoned basidioma, with large pores. Hexagonia variegata Berk. it is considered the current name for the species in the databases. However, the publication of H. papyracea by Berkeley in 1843 was prior to the validation of H. variegata, which only occurred in 1852 (Gugliotta & Bononi 1999, Abrahão et al. 2009).

There are about 700 records of this species in GBIF, about 320 in Brazil. It is a common species.

Habitat and Ecology
In Brazil the species is found in Amazonia, Atlantic Forest, Caatinga and Cerrado.
Threats
The species is well distributed in Brazil. However, the Amazon has currently the highest rates of deforestation in the last decades and the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado are already hotspots. Caatinga is threatened by desertification.
