Assessment Notes

Melanoleuca yucatnensis is only known from two tropical forests localities in Quintana Roo State. This area comprises the expanding city of Cancun, the biggest touristic site in the Caribbean.
The genus Melanoleuca was subject to a monographical study by Sánchez-García, et al. (2013) so all Melanoleuca collections in the country were studied. In consequence the restricted geographical distribution of the species is not due to undersampling.

Justification

Is hard to estimate the population size but given its known EOO of 2988 Km2 its potential EOO is not higher that 20,000 km2 and its habitat is threatened by climate change, tourism and deforestation, expecting a reduction of more than 30% in the next 50 years. Should be listed as vulnerable under the criteria A3c.

Taxonomic notes

Melanoleuca yucatanensis is a small gilled mushroom characterized by its tan-grey smooth pileus with white sinuated lamellae, and cylindrical bulbous concolor stipe.
It is distinguished by its small size (15–35 mm cap diameter) and urticoid cystidia.

Geographic range

Melanoleuca yucatanensis is only known from Yucatan peninsula in Mexico.

Population and Trends

Melanoleuca yucatnensis is only known from two tropical forests localities in Quintana Roo State (1982): El Eden natural preserve and Puerto Progreso. This area comprises the expanding city of Cancun, the biggest touristic site in the caribbean.
There is another Mushroom Observer record (observation) in “Cortadura”, Veracruz State (2011). Even while this record includes photos and microscopical observations, the specimen is not available and has some ambiguous data, thus this record is not confirmed.

Habitat and Ecology

Grows solitary in tropical forests with calcareous soil.

Threats

The only two records of Melanoleuca yucatnensis belong to a single subpopulation in an tropical forest in Quintana Roo State. This area comprises the expanding city of Cancun, the biggest touristic site in the Caribbean, then land-use change is the major threats for this species´ habitat. Additionally, this region is constantly been hit by big hurricanes and global warming will increase this.

Research needed

To perform phylogenetic analysis using the type specimen available, from which it has not been possible to obtain sequences (Sánchez-García et al. 2013). To look for the species aoutside its known distribution range.
